What We Do

WHAT WE DO

We provide positive activities for young people and young adults, aged 9-25, with social communication difficulties through a planned series of outdoor activity breaks (camps) tailored to their individual needs. Camps may last from a 24 hour stop over, a weekend or up to a week in the school holidays.  Young people are accompanied and supported on a 1:1 ratio by our team of carefully selected and trained volunteers.

Before a young person/adult comes on a camp, a staff member will visit him/her at home and begin to develop a relationship with them through a number of short activity sessions locally, leading up to a day’s activity at a local outdoor pursuits centre. When a young person is ready they will be invited for a 24 hour stopover or weekend.

Activities might include any of the following: canoeing, kayaking, ropes course, mountain biking, sailing, archery and team challenges; but the programme is determined by the needs and interests of the young people concerned.

We run programmes of half day activities during the Easter holidays and full day activities during the summer holidays.

We also deliver the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for some of our young people/adults.

Are you looking for opportunities for your young person to try new activities, develop their social interaction skills, make new friends and have fun?

If the answer is yes, then we may be able to help:If your young person is receiving self-directed support, then this can be used to access our services: for more information contact us on info@reach4reality.org.uk or download our Welcome Pack.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

By taking part in the activities on a camp, the young people will gain self-respect and confidence; they will learn to relate better with others and develop personal life skills.  They will discover that “can’t” will become “can” as they develop trust and rise to face the challenges they experience on camp.

But above all they will have fun and make new friends!

WHAT IS A WEEKEND CAMP LIKE?

Every Reach4Reality camp is different as the activities are tailored to the young people on each camp. However each weekend follows the same basic structure with plenty of opportunities between organised activities for more informal socialising such a playing Uno, air hockey or table tennis in the games room, or football or basketball in the Sports hall.  Click this link to see a sample programme. When staying at the Abernethy Trust, Nethybridge we stay in one of their chalets but eat in the dining room in the main house.

WHERE DO WE GO?

Some activities we run ourselves locally (under our own AALA Licence) using appropriately qualified staff. For other activities we use AALA certified outdoor pursuits centres and organisations within the Highlands.

These might be:  Abernethy Trust at NethybridgeActive SpiritFairburn Activity Centre or Glencoe Outdoor Centre.
